Almond Butter Maca Superfood Smooth
Smoothies are a great breakfast meal. Throw in some fruits and vegetables, a healthy fat, maybe some protein powder, a milk of choice, blend and you’re good to go. Healthy breakfasts help to get your day started off on the right foot and set you up well for the rest of the day. It’s fun to experiment with different combinations and figure out your favorites.
Adding Superfoods to Smoothies
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with stepping up my smoothie game a bit by adding superfoods to the mix. Adding superfoods to smoothies is a great way to include powerful nutrients to your diet. Superfoods can boost your metabolism and help you fight disease and have many anti-inflammatory benefits.
A superfood is a special fruit, vegetable or protein that is especially nutrient dense. Not every fruit, vegetable, and protein is created equal. Some are more powerful than others! There are so many superfoods out there to try and I’ve started off with just a few to see what I like. One in particular that I’ve been loving is maca.
What is Maca?
Maca is a cruciferous vegetable found in Peru and has some amazing benefits. It resembles a radish (even though it’s a bit larger) and is grown for its nutrient-rich root. It’s found high in the Andes and has been used for hundreds of years to increase fertility (apparently it helps to increase sex drive!). It’s also a strong adaptogen, which means it helps the body respond to stress. It has a ton of antioxidants and is known to help balance hormones, increase energy, athletic performance (by increasing oxygen in the blood) and even prevent memory loss.
Maca is made up of about 10 percent protein, which has about 20 amino acids and seven essential amino acids. It is a great source of potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and sulfur and also has a lot of vitamins, including B1, B2, C, and even E.
You can purchase maca in powder form from Navitas Organics.
